KSRTC depots to have electronic toilets
Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation will install electronic toilets which are fully automated and will flush and clean by itself, Transport Minister Jose Thettayil has said.
In the initial phase, e-toilets would be installed at KSRTC depots in Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad. E-toilets could be the answer to the State's problem of a total lack of clean public toilets. Though there are public toilets at KSRTC stations, because of frequent usage and water shortage, these are foul-smelling, unclean and repel passengers.
Private firm
In the West, public toilets are fully automated and there is no need for manual cleaning and maintenance. These pay-and-use toilets function using a combination of electrical and mechanical inputs as well as information technology.
The e-toilets being installed at KSRTC is a venture of Dea Celera Electronics, a Technopark-based firm, which will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of these toilets. KSRTC will not have to incur any expense in this new initiative.
Payment system
The e-toilets have an automated payment collection system. As soon as a user drops in the coins, the electronic door will open and the lights and exhaust fans are turned on. Once the user exits, toilets will flush and sterilise automatically. The floor is also automatically flushed clean.
The toilets can be connected to the nearest drainage line while the water supply comes from an in-built tank. The toilets can be powered by solar panels or by the grid. Every toilet will have power back-up using batteries.
Other facilities
The water level in the tanks in monitored electronically by the company. If there is water shortage, power failure or electronic systemic failure, the toilet will shut itself, preventing further usage. There are additional safety features like secure doors which can be opened manually from inside. This will ensure that even if there is any electronic shut down, none will be trapped inside.
