A new Environmental Startegy

The Minister for Environment and Forest has initiated a new environmental strategy which controls and boost potential development. His recent decisions against the reports of Environmental Clearance Committee claearly triggered a new policy. He has approved many controversial plans like POSCO(Orissa), SAIL- Jharkhand. LAVOSA- Jaipur and rope way over Gir Forest- Gujarath. The strategy he put forth is parallel viz. conservation - development.
Consider the example of SAIL approval-  Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), the country’s second largest producer of the alloy got approval to extract iron ore from its Chiria mines in Jharkhand. This will allow SAIL to more than quadruple capacity to 60 million tonnes (mt) by 2020.
.
See the conditions he has recommended while approving.Processing and stockpiling should be 15 km away from the forest, water conservation, 20crore for biodiversity conservation, 2% of the profit for CSR initiative- CSR programmes such as skill development and training of tribal youth, and ensuring no discharge into the adjoining Koena river etc. are welcoming.

But still decisions are in the midst of controversy.“The forest advisory committee’s objection was largely on the ground that the mine was almost in the middle of the forest. This would have compromised the integrity of the forest,” said an FAC member, who did not want to be named.

Citing the remark of FAC member, EAC Report and strong agitation from environmental activities, the liabilities bestowed on Jairam is increasing. As a pro environment and bio diversity protector he is expected to maintain the originality of Chira area and to ensure the conditions are followed/implemented.
