Oct. 15 – In addition to extending its rail service from Lhasa to Nepal, China also plans to expand its rail line to Nyangtri, a city located right on the border of Arunachal Pradesh.
Most of Arunachal Pradesh is currently claimed by China as a part of South Tibet. Its existing northern border reflects a 1914 treaty held between the United Kingdom and a Tibetan government, but the treaty was not enforced by India until 1950, and has yet to be recognized by the Chinese government at all.
Nyangtri is also where the Brahmaputra, a trans-national river that originates in Tibet, may be diverted northwards by the Chinese.
Strategic affairs expert Brahma Chellaney told India’s The Economic Times that the rail link to Nyangtri has serious geopolitical implications.
“The building of the railway to this area is significant because of two reasons: China has unveiled plans to construct there the world’s largest dam which will be more than twice bigger than Three Gorges Dam, now the world’s largest dam, and also because it will strengthen China’s rapid military deployment capability in the eastern (Arunachal) sector,” said Chellaney, adding that with the building of this rail way, China will be in a better position to rapidly deploy forces to its western-most territories.
